WHO WE ARE…..
Pickaway HELPS is a collaboration between all 4 school districts in the county along with the Pickaway County Board of Commissioners. We formally began in 2007 and our goal is to make education beyond high school possible for all residents of Pickaway County. We believe this is the key to strengthening the local workforce and improving the economic stability of our county, which improves the quality of life for all of us.
Our program is currently at work in the classrooms of each district assisting students from 8th grade up to seniors with career exploration and planning and helping students understand that their education level has a direct impact on their future career options and potential earnings. We provide assistance with all the necessary steps in the college-going process, whether that college experience be a technical or career training program, a 2 year associate degree, a 4 year traditional bachelor’s degree or beyond.
Pickaway HELPS Program Activity Highlights:
Real Money/Real World - financial literacy curriculum from Ohio State University Extension- presented to all Pickaway County 8th graders (800+) - 4 days of classroom lessons and 5th day culminating activity simulation manned by 15-20 community volunteers, underlying goal being to help young students understand the difference between wants and needs in the family budget and to recognize the impact of education level on potential future income.
ACT Prep Workshops - offered in spring and fall to all Pickaway County high school students, 4 sessions in total, taught by Ohio University adjunct professor using “The Real ACT Study Guide” workbook. Examines practice questions, tips for test day, reading techniques, time and stress management as students prepare to take college entrance exams.
FAFSA Day - Free Financial Aid Workshop - In partnership with the financial aid office of Ohio Christian University, assistance is given to students and their families with completion of the FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the necessary first step in the financial aid process, and sometimes the most intimidating, much like the IRS tax return. Kids on Campus - summer enrichment camp for all Pickaway County students grades 1-4 focusing on math, science, technology and art, providing hands-on activities in a fun learning environment. Held at Ohio Christian University, a guided tour of the campus is given at the end of each week providing very young students with early exposure to a local college campus.
Career Planning - grade level appropriate advising services to guide college and career decisions and planning presented in classrooms to grades 6-12 and coordinated with school district strategic plans
